DIY UPCYCLED RUG: DENIM UNDER FOOT
Go from rags to stitches with this stylish denim throw rug created from leftover denim. Levi’s® tailor William Phala has everything you need to make it happen.
WHAT YOU’LL NEED:
– Old denim and pieces of fabric of similar thickness
– Tape measure – Scissors
– Sewing machine
– Heavy-duty sewing thread
– Flat surface to work on
STEP 1:
First, decide how big you want your rug to be.
STEP 2:
Cut pieces into any size you’re comfortable with, using straight edges. The smaller the pieces you cut, the more sewing you’ll need to do—but all those small pieces add interesting texture. Just be sure to eliminate buttons, zippers and rivets that could hurt your feet.
STEP 3:
Once all your pieces are cut out, lay them out on your flat surface in the pattern you want to sew them in. Leave extra material around each outer edge to allow room for sewing a neat border.
STEP 4:
Pin the pieces together so they stay in place while sewing.
STEP 5:
To make sewing easier, split your rug into smaller sections and then sew the sections together.
STEP 6:
Once the final piece is secured, fold the outer edge over and sew it down to create a binding effect that makes the final rug look neat and tidy.
PRO TIP:
If you don’t have a sewing machine, you can sew by hand using a sturdy needle with extra-strong sewing thread. The larger your pieces are, the simpler the hand-sewing process will be.
